FBO
FBO – Fixed-Base Operator

What is an FBO? An Overview of the Benefits of Private Jet Travel
In aviation, there are numerous abbreviations, but if you frequently fly by private jet, there’s one acronym you should know: FBO .
FBO stands for “Fixed-Base Operator” and refers to a specialized service provider in the field of general aviation. Many airports have their own terminals for business aircraft — but not all do. This is where FBOs come into play: they offer a wide range of services for both aircraft and passengers, allowing you to avoid the stress and crowds of busy main terminals.

The Origin of the Term “FBO”
The origin of FBOs dates back to the early years of civil aviation in the USA, shortly after World War I, when the industry was still unregulated. Many pilots acquired military aircraft and offered civilian transport flights. At that time, flight operations were still relatively low.
With the introduction of the Air Commerce Act of 1926, pilots were legally required to hold a license and have their aircraft regularly maintained to ensure passenger safety. During this phase, aircraft operators and maintenance mechanics founded private companies designed for continuous operations. These companies began to establish themselves as “Fixed Base Operators.

The Development of FBOs Over the Years
Modern FBOs today are, of course, no longer comparable to those of the past. Back then, they were simply regarded as safe landing spots and refueling stations. Today, they usually offer a wide range of services tailored to the specific needs of passengers, the location, and the resident airlines.

Global FBO Networks
There are currently more than 4,500 FBOs worldwide, although the exact number can vary depending on the source and region. These FBOs are located at airports around the world and offer various services for general aviation.
In Europe, there are about 1,000 FBOs. The exact number can also fluctuate here, as some FBOs operate multiple locations at one airport or different operators are active depending on the country and market conditions.
The number of FBOs is generally increasing, as more and more airports expand their infrastructure for general aviation and specialized providers in the industry are in growing demand.
The choice of FBO is usually made by the private jet operator, who ensures that the selected provider offers all necessary services for a safe and comfortable flight.
